Commissioning Workshops

The Silk Road Project regularly conducts internal workshops for the development of new compositions. Often held off-season at Tanglewood Music Center, these retreats bring together composers and musicians, who explore new musical territory as they enrich the performance repertoire of the Silk Road Ensemble.

Composers attend rehearsals of their own works; they have a unique opportunity to polish original ideas and test new approaches based on feedback from Silk Road Ensemble musicians.

As a far-reaching outcome of our workshops, members of the Silk Road Ensemble often emerge as composers themselves and share this creative process with their own students, peers and community members.

"I feel I am a better musician playing Bach and Beethoven after doing what I've done, and I think every member of the Ensemble also fees that they're better at their own tradition after they've opened up into something else."
