Silk Road Ensemble members Gulia Mashurova and Johnny Gandelsman at a commissioning workshop at Tanglewood Music Center. Retreats and workshops provide an opportunity for Silk Road Ensemble members to develop music for a wide range of instruments.

Ali Asgar Mammadov

Tar (Azerbaijan) Ali Asgar Mammadov studied at the Bulbul Music School (1983-1994) and the Baku Music Academy (1995-2001). Among his teachers were Azerbaijan's distinguished tar performers Ramiz Guliyev, Hamid Vakilov and Vamig Mammadaliyev.

Mammadov was awarded honors at mugham competitions in Azerbaijan (1996, 1997, 1998). He was part of a traditional mugham trio led by Alim Qasimov from 1999 to 2000 and resumed collaboration with the singer in 2005. As a part of Qasimov's group, Mammadov has performed internationally with as part of Qasimov’s group and with the Silk Road Ensemble. He collaborates with the Cultural Center "Alim" in Baku.

Mammadov has worked with the orchestra of the Azerbaijan Opera and Ballet Theater since 1998 and has taught at the Azerbaijan National Conservatory since 2005.
