During two weeks in March and April, the Silk Road Ensemble with Yo-Yo Ma performed nine concerts in Texas, California and British Columbia. We had some wonderful audiences along the way for music inspired by traditions as far-flung as China, Persia, Japan, Galicia and Brazil.
We were charmed by Mark Swed's description of the Ensemble in his concert review in the LA Times: "The essence of the
Silk Road Project, the umbrella organization of the ensemble, is
sharing, and this is something these musicians do exceptionally well.
First, they are all special. Second, they seem to like each other.
Third, they like to try things out. Fourth, they know how to party." Sharing and learning—and yes, fun—are indeed at the heart of our organization. It's always a special occasion when members of the group are able to assemble from around the world to play together. We hope to share a bit of our experience on the road with you through the video below and the photos in our Postcard from the Road.
