Weaving east with west in Silk Road Project

EuroNews recently interviewed our artistic director Yo-Yo Ma about the Silk Road Project. We contributed video of a couple of pieces the Silk Road Ensemble performed at Harvard University's Sanders Theatre this spring: "Silent City" by Iranian kamancheh master and composer Kayhan Kalhor, and movements of "¡Chayraq!: Rough Guide to a Modern Day Tawantinsuyu" by Gabriela Lena Frank.

This brief video about our organization recognizes that "cultural exchange is at its heart" and points to the role trust plays in supporting collaboration, especially on a global scale. "To me," Yo-Yo says, "it's all about taking something that is really beautiful or transcendent and then sharing it with a group."

EuroNews also produced the bonus video below with additional outtakes from its interview with Yo-Yo. He describes the first time the Silk Road Ensemble learned a piece with Indian tabla player Sandeep Das, who doesn't read music but has an astounding memory. He also discusses mentorship, his broad goals for education, and what gives him inspiration.
