Indigo Goes to School

This video was filmed at two schools in New York City: PS161 and the Young Women's Leadership School in Brooklyn. Both are taking part in a pilot program, Silk Road Connect, a multidisciplinary educational initiative led by the Silk Road Project.

As one part of this program, students explore the dye indigo through historical, scientific and artistic modes of inquiry. Here, they get hands-on experience in dyeing workshops and reflect on indigo as an example of one of many "tales told by things."

The Silk Road Project is conducting Silk Road Connect in the 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 school years by invitation from the New York City Department of Education.

"We always look for interdisciplinary connections ... so it's great to have this partnership. In fact, we'd like more of it."
– TALANA BRADLEY
Principal of the Young Women's Leadership School of Brooklyn
