American Express: Sponsor of the Silk Road Project in Hong Kong

American Express Company became the Silk Road Project’s Hong Kong sponsor in October 2007. This began a new term of sponsorship built on the shared commitment to furthering cross-cultural understanding and innovation.

This partnership supported the concert by the Silk Road Ensemble with Yo-Yo Ma in Hong Kong on October 9, 2007, as well as a community workshop in Hong Kong.

The workshop took place in the impoverished and isolated Tin Shui Wai area at the Hong Kong Student Aid Society Primary School, where many children had never before experienced a concert. During a 90-minute interactive experience, the Silk Road Ensemble treated 500 students and 100 guests and employees of American Express to a lively performance and a demonstration of traditional music and instruments from countries in the Silk Road region.

American Express also hosted a private reception following the concert in Hong Kong on October 9. This event, exclusively for American Express Black Card holders, provided the perfect setting for guests to personally meet Yo-Yo Ma and members of the Silk Road Ensemble.

At a workshop in Tin Shui Wai, when one young boy asked how the Silk Road Ensemble could play together without a conductor, Yo-Yo Ma replied,“We trust one another, and we communicate through our music.”
