Harvard University Residency brings together tradition and innovation
September 26-30, December 13-20, 2005
In addition to collaborating on a world premiere with Professor Kelly’s class, the first Silk Road Project/Harvard University residency featured a sold-out concert in Sanders Theatre in September.
Five lucky Harvard students were selected to perform Kayhan Kalhor’s Blue as the Turquoise Night of Neyshabur with the Silk Road Ensemble. The 2000 composition, richly influenced by traditional Persian scales and rhythms, inspired a standing ovation from the audience.
“The musicians of the Silk Road Ensemble are in many ways a modern representation of the Silk Road. And so is Harvard University,” remarked Laura Freid, the Project’s executive director. “Like the ancient Silk Road, we were both established on tradition and innovation. Ideas, cultures and histories are exchanged, and together we create something that preserves time-honored traditions, even as we create new possibilities.”
