A Nobel Performance
The Silk Road Ensemble, Yo-Yo Ma and The Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra came together for the Nobel Prize Concert, kicking off the celebration and presentation of the 2005 Nobel Prizes. For over a century, Nobel Day – December 10 – has been a day of international celebration. It was a true honor for the Ensemble to introduce Legend of Herlen to experts and leaders from around the world on this momentous occasion.
Grammy Nominations
Wu Man, pipa, performed with the Kronos Quartet, Asha Bhosle, and Zakir Hussain on the Nonesuch album You've Stolen My Heart: Songs from R.D. Burman's Bollywood, featuring transcriptions by Ljova, which was nominated for Best Contemporary World Music Album. Kayhan Kalhor, kamancheh, is one of the four artists featured on Faryad (The Cry), the live double CD from Masters of Persian Music nominated as Best Traditional World Music Album. Ayre, with music by Osvaldo Golijov, Gustavo Santaolalla and Luciano Berio, and performances by soprano Dawn Upshaw, the Andalucian Dogs and Ljova on viola, was nominated for Best Classical Contemporary Composition. Steve Epstein, producer of Silk Road Journeys: Beyond the Horizon, was nominated as Classical Producer of the Year.
Yo-Yo Ma is recognized for his work with the Silk Road Project
The Dan David Prize has selected Yo-Yo Ma as the 2006 recipient of a $1 million prize, honoring his work towards the preservation of cultural heritage. The Dan David Prize recognizes and encourages innovative and interdisciplinary research while fostering the universal values of excellence, creativity, justice, democracy, and progress. This Prize is significant, as it recognizes Yo-Yo and the Silk Road Ensemble's work "to advance and improve the world." Awards will be conferred at Tel Aviv University in May, and the celebration will feature a performance by the Silk Road Ensemble.
