Program Overview
On September 8-19, 2004, Cellist Yo-Yo Ma and Artistic Director of the Silk Road Project, Inc. joined members of the Silk Road Ensemble and musicians from Azerbaijan, China, India, and Iran in a series of workshops, seminars and concerts aimed at training a new generation of musicians in the performance practice of music from the Silk Road region at The Tanglewood Music Center Lenox, Massachusetts, and Carnegie Hall, New York, New York. This workshop was presented jointly by the Weill Music Institute at Carnegie Hall, the Silk Road Project, and The Boston Symphony Orchestra,
Participants spend a week at The Tanglewood Music Center working on newly commissioned music and traditional repertoire from the Silk Road Countries. This workshop culminated in a two-day festival at Carnegie Hall in New York featuring public events exploring the relationship between tradition and innovation in music, using already existing music as well as newly commissioned music by Silk Road composers. Events included performance workshops, multimedia presentations, and panel discussions in Zankel Hall, Weill Hall, and the Rohatyn Room as well as more informal events at CAMI Hall across the street from Carnegie Hall.
