Dmitri Yanov-Yanovsky
composer (b. 1963, Uzbekistan)
Dmitri Yanov-Yanovsky is one of the strongest and most distinctive voices among the composers who have emerged from the former Soviet Republics. Distinguishing Yanov-Yanovsky is his facility at uniting the sounds of the East and West. His cycle of five pieces entitled Chang-Musics I-V is based on the small Central Asian cimbalom called chang. Presentiment (1991), Awakening (1993), and Conjunctions (1995, recorded by the Kronos Quartet) make evocative use of the Muslim call to prayer. Takyr (1995) utilizes traditional Uzbek percussion instruments. Born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, he studied music at the Tashkent State Conservatory. He has been the recipient of numerous honors including special mention at the Competition for the Composition of Sacred Music in Fribourg, Switzerland, and the ALEA III International Prize, Boston.
Dmitri Yanov-Yanovsky composed Night Music: Voices in the Leaves, a 2000 Silk Road Project commission, and is part of the Siemens Artists-in-Residence Program.
