jang-go
[JANG go] orig. Korea
The jang-go, an hourglass drum, is part of the samul nori [SA moolr NOL ree] musical tradition, a type of folk music popularized by Korean farmers. The jang-go has two different leather heads and is struck with mallots. One side of the drum has a higher pitch than the other.
Samul nori is represented by four different percussion instruments including the jang-go. Each of the four samul nori percussion instruments represents a different force in nature. The jang-go is associated with water or rain.
