Project MUSIC

As a social impact organization, Silkroad works to inspire collaboration and combat hate and isolation in innovative ways. Music has always provided a space of conviviality in trying times. It is a space from which we can recall soundscapes of home and heritage, and a space from which new traditions and communities grow. At Silkroad, we believe in the universal shared humanity that comes through music, and the healing nature art and creativity can possess. Silkroad is partnering within the justice system to create music and educational programming for those incarcerated where walls are a literal and figurative divider. Project MUSIC (Music Uniting Strangers Into Community) brings the artists and music of Silkroad into carceral communities across the country to exchange musical and cultural traditions, creating connection through communal singing and music making. This includes free concerts at the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility for Women, Sing Sing, and other carceral communities along the routes of Silkroad tours. Additionally, Silkroad has compiled video and audio resources to share widely across the American Prison Data Systems so that incarcerated communities across the country can have access to Silkroad music at no cost.
